The First Habit: Tracking Your Way to Routine

Achieving balance and fulfillment in life requires intentionally developing good habits across five key areas. This is the "5x Rule" - by developing and balancing the spiritual, social, physical, financial, and mental aspects of your life, you achieve much more in your life, with greater satisfaction and inner tranquility.

But simply identifying these five crucial domains requires that you have a plan to achieve that crucial balance. So the first habit to cultivate is the meta-habit of habit formation itself. With a solid system to reliably establish and solidify positive routines, you have the fundamental tools to live your best life. 

Therefore, the first habit to develop is to start tracking the daily activities you want to turn into habits. This is easily accomplished by recording your daily activities with a checklist or to-do tool. At the top of the checklist is to record whether or not you used the checklist. Then record how often you used your checklist. How many days in a row have you been able to diligently use your checklist? 

I use an app on my iPhone called ToDoist, which allows me to set up recurring daily activities. Todoist allows me to set up recurring actions that I want to become habitual. I can set up tasks that should be done every day, like stretching, and other tasks that should be done every workday, such as checking my schedule and email. I recommend you use a system like ToDoist or a similar tool. These apps help gamify habit development, making the process more enjoyable and engaging (1). Your first and primary goal is to simply start using the system. 

Building a flourishing, balanced life is not easy, but it can be achieved one habit at a time. Start by establishing the meta-habits to track habits. You could use a written checklist, an online app, or an Excel spreadsheet. The primary first habit is to regularly use a habit-tracking system. By beginning with simple daily habit tracking, you lay the groundwork for successfully building routines across all of the 5x domains.

 In the journey of personal development, the formation of good habits plays a pivotal role. An effective way to get started is to follow this two-step approach.

Start Simple

The initial step in habit formation is to begin with simplicity. This phase involves identifying a small, manageable action that aligns with the desired habit. For instance, if the goal is cultivating a book-reading habit, one might start by reading a page daily or just opening the book. Performing the habit in a consistent setting, e.g., just before going to bed or immediately after dinner, helps establish the habit (1). The simplicity of the task reduces the psychological barrier to entry, making it more likely for the individual to engage in the habit consistently. The important thing is to develop consistency over an extended period of time, typically about two months (2).

Refinement and Definition

As the habit is regularly practiced, the next phase is gradually refining and further defining it. This typically involves increasing the complexity or duration of the habit. Continuing with the book reading example, this might mean progressing from a page to a chapter a day. This phase is crucial as it helps make the habit more likely to result in the desired outcome. 

Developing good habits is a process that begins with simple steps and evolves through continuous refinement. By following this approach, individuals can effectively integrate new, positive habits into their lives, leading to long-term personal growth and improvement.

  • Start with a Simple, Manageable Habit: Choose a habit that is straightforward and not overwhelming, such as drinking a glass of water each morning or spending five minutes in meditation. The simpler the habit, the easier it is to incorporate it into your daily life without feeling overburdened.

  • Ensure Consistency by Linking to Existing Routines: Habit formation thrives on consistency. Engage in your small habit daily rather than attempting larger, more irregular tasks. Attach your new habit to a pre-existing routine. For example, if you wish to read more, make a habit of reading a few pages after your nightly cup of tea. Reward yourself for consistent habit maintenance. Rewards can be simple pleasures, such as enjoying a favorite snack after a week of adherence.

  • Health - Habits around eating, exercise, sleep and reducing stress are critical for maintaining good physical and mental health. Things like unhealthy diets or lack of sleep contribute to disease over time.

  • Happiness - Habits that cultivate optimism, mindfulness and meaning enable us to find more satisfaction and enjoyment in our daily lives.

  • Track progress - Monitor habits with a journal, calendar or app. Tracking keeps us motivated, shows progress, and reveals what's working versus what needs tweaking.

  • Reward progress - Recognize milestones through treats, compliments, or celebrations. Positive reinforcement fires up our brains' reward pathways.

The first step is always the hardest, of course. Beginning a worthy endeavor can feel awkward, intimidating, and imperfect. But press forward anyway! If it's worth doing, then it's worth starting. If it's worth doing, then it's worth doing poorly at first. Lay that first brick patiently. Put pencil to paper as best you can. Lift your voice and let the notes shine through. True mastery reveals itself slowly, refined only through determined practice over time. Meet the task where you are able and commit to steady improvement.

Forward motion and consistency pave the road to excellence. Straining towards some impossibly high standard too soon will only frustrate progress and can dampen enthusiasm. Build instead on small victories, no matter how modest. These are the solid footholds where greater things take shape.

The beginning of a habit

Developing constructive habits is like building a sturdy brick wall, one brick at a time. Each small, consistent action lays another brick down, slowly but surely creating something substantial over time. With each consistent action, the wall becomes bigger, and when properly built, it will be strong, studied, and highly resistant to challenges. 

Too often, we think big habits have to be built through sheer willpower alone in massive bursts of activity. But the truth is, big things come from small beginnings consistently acted upon. Slow, repetitive actions gradually build up steam. The mighty oak tree started as a small acorn. The greatest symphonies started with a composer putting a few simple notes on paper. Your habits start by doing tiny actions, with discipline and regularity, to build momentum.

So where to start when developing a new habit? Begin with the smallest, easiest version of that activity you can think of. Make it so laughably simple and quick to do that you can't say no. Five pushups. Reading one page in a book. Doing a 30-second meditation. Once that micro-habit is locked in, build upon it gradually. Your first task is to create the habit. The next task is to improve the habit and make it more challenging. 

The key is starting. Don't wait until you have more time, more energy, more motivation. Begin now with something tiny. Prove to yourself that you can stick to something small but consistent. Momentum will build from there. Like a snowball rolling down a hill, your small habits will compound.

Start off by making a 10-day promise to yourself. Promise yourself that you will do this one small action, the beginning of your new habit, every day without fail. 

Staying motivated along the way is about progress, not perfection. Celebrate and appreciate every brick you lay. Don't criticize yourself for what isn't built yet or how fast it's going. Focus only on stacking one brick after another. Measure progress on your timeline, no one else's. Consistency over intensity is the mantra.

Build your habits brick by brick. Lay them patiently, proudly. And soon, you'll stand back in awe at what discipline and regularity can create.
